LEARNING BASE

We’re rightly proud of the RAISE-AP provision in the heart of Eastleigh, Southampton. The provision is a bespoke learning environment aimed to support our young people to reintegrate into school life, by building confidence, social skills, and emotional development, ensuring they are ready to succeed.

When it comes to alternative provision, the classroom is only part of the picture. Where a setting is located, and what surrounds it, can be just as powerful as anything that happens within its four walls. Our RAISE-AP learning base has been chosen with real intention, playing a key role in the education, growth, and confidence-building of the young people we work with.

In our local area sits Fleming Park sports centre. For many of the young people we support, physical activity isn't just a break from learning, it's a gateway back into it. Exercise reduces anxiety, improves focus, and gives students a tangible sense of achievement at a time when that can feel hard to come by. Whether it's a swim, a session in the gym, or a team activity, having the sports centre on our doorstep means physical wellbeing is woven naturally into the week rather than treated as an afterthought. Sport also teaches resilience, cooperation and how we respond to winning / losing - all important values at RAISE-AP.

Lakeside Country Park is also nearby. A beautiful nature reserve that has become important for our young people. It is used in within our curriculum for students interested in photography, offering an ever-changing, endlessly patient subject - light through branches, a heron waiting by the water, the slow shift of seasons. Photography here does far more than produce images. It encourages young people to slow down, to observe, and to find something worth capturing in the world around them. For students who may have felt overlooked or disengaged, discovering that they have an eye for beauty and the patience to wait for the right moment can be genuinely transformative. The natural environment also provides a calming, low-pressure space where conversation flows more freely and anxiety tends to soften.

One of the most quietly important aspects of our location is its connectivity. The local bus and train network runs right through our world, and we use it deliberately as real Skills for real life. Learning to plan a journey, buy a ticket, read a timetable, navigate a busy platform, and arrive somewhere on time are not small things - for many young people in alternative provision, these are skills that have simply never been taught. These journeys become life lessons in independence and self-reliance. They build confidence in unfamiliar situations, practise communication with strangers, and open up a sense that the wider world is accessible - not something to be feared.

The local shopping centre nearby also gives our students something invaluable: the ordinary world. Busy, unpredictable, full of different people - it's the kind of environment that many of our students find challenging, and that's precisely why we use it. Supported visits help young people practise everyday interactions. Asking for help in a shop, handling money, waiting in a queue, managing the sensory noise of a crowded space. Over time, what once felt overwhelming becomes familiar. Students begin to see themselves as part of the community rather than apart from it, and that shift in identity matters enormously for long-term wellbeing and future independence.
